Green Ronin to publish Wild Card RPG...

...written by yours truly.

We've been sitting on this for awhile because Green Ronin wanted to make the announcement at GenCon, and I have been officially cleared to release it via the various tubes of the various internets.

Here is the official press release:

GREEN RONIN TO PUBLISH WILD CARDS RPG LINE

Industry Leader to do RPG Adaptation of Classic Shared World Anthologies

August 16, 2007--SEATTLE, WA: Green Ronin Publishing has reached an agreement with New York Times bestselling author George R.R. Martin to license the Wild Cards series of shared world anthologies. Green Ronin will publish a line of Wild Cards roleplaying game books next year for its Mutants & Masterminds RPG. The first of these books, the Wild Cards Campaign Setting by series author John Jos. Miller, will debut next August at Gen Con 2008.

The Wild Card series began in 1987, developing out of an ongoing superhero roleplaying campaign run by Martin and eventually spanning 17 volumes. Contributing authors include Roger Zelazny, Lewis Shiner, Melinda M. Snodgrass, Walter Jon Williams, John Jos. Miller, and Martin himself. Tor will be bringing the series back this January with Inside Straight, the first in a new generation of Wild Cards novels.

"The world of Wild Cards is a perfect match for our Mutants & Masterminds game," said Green Ronin President Chris Pramas. "With Inside Straight starting a new chapter in the Wild Cards saga, it seemed the perfect time to bring the property back to its roots in roleplaying games."

"This feels like coming home again!" said George R.R. Martin. "Long-time fans of the Wild Cards books will remember that the series grew out of a role-playing game, way back when, so it's nice to returning to that world, after far too long an absence. I hope that our fans will have as much fun gaming with the Wild Cards characters as we have had writing about them these past twenty years. And we couldn't hope for a better partner. Green Ronin does beautiful books, and their Mutants & Masterminds system should be a great fit for Wild Cards. With John Jos. Miller -- creator of Carnifex, Yeoman, Wraith, Father Squid, and many more -- writing the new campaign setting book, it's sure to be complete, accurate, and faithful to the mosaics, a must-have for every fan of the series, even those who do not game."

Green Ronin has already done successful RPG adaptations of literary properties like Thieves' World and the Black Company. Earlier this year the company announced that it had licensed Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire books. "I said then that 2008 would be a great year for fans of George R.R. Martin's work and I meant it," added Pramas.

About Wild Cards

The alien virus arrived on Earth just after World War II -- and the world was never the same. For those who become infected, there are two results: death, or transformation. And depending on the recipient, death is sometimes the preferable outcome. Only one in a hundred become superhuman "aces" as a side effect of the virus; the rest are turned into horrible, grotesque "jokers." It's a strange and wonderful, terrible and terrifying world where anything can happen. A world that, in a twist of fate, could lie just outside your door. A world of Wild Cards.

About George R.R. Martin

George R.R. Martin sold his first story in 1971 and has been writing professionally ever since. He has written fantasy, horror, and science fiction, and for his sins spent ten years in Hollywood as a writer/producer, working on Twilight Zone, Beauty and the Beast, and various feature films and television pilots that were never made. In the mid 90s he returned to prose, his first love, and began work on his epic fantasy series A Song of Ice and Fire. He has been in the Seven Kingdoms ever since. Whenever he's allowed to leave, he returns to Santa Fe, New Mexico, where he lives with the lovely Parris and two cats named Augustus and Caligula who think they run the place.

Needless to say, we're quite pleased with this development.  I've been hard at work on the first volume and have written about 50,000 words of a projected 200,000 or so.  These will be meaty volumes suitable not only for gamers, but as encyclopedias for anyone who wants to know virtually anything about the wild card universe.

This, of course, is the "secret" referrred to in my tag-line, so I guess I'll have to write a new one.

Thanks to all the fans out there for your continued support during the years.  I appreciate it greatly.

John Jos. Miller

Very excited about this, as I already said on George's LJ. Looking forward to it!

Mr. Burns says:

"Excellent."

Is it safe to assume that the book will lead up right to the new set of books Tor's publishing?
johnjosmiller From: johnjosmiller Date: August 16th, 2007 09:50 pm (UTC) (Link)
Yes, the initial two volumes will cover the bantam, baen, and ibook years.

I'm budgeted for almost 200,000 words, which seems like a lot (except when compared to George's books) but, believe me, there's a lot of material to cover with the intitial seventeen.

Damn, you're not kidding... that's less than 12,000 words per book. Just writing an abbreviated history of a major character like Croyd or Captain Trips could easily take several thousand words, let alone a history of something like the Rox storyline.
johnjosmiller From: johnjosmiller Date: August 17th, 2007 05:35 pm (UTC) (Link)
It's going to be something of a balancing act. I'm going to be summarizing character histories and personal entanglements, but leaving out the details.

Captain Trips is a nightmare to deal with, but the biggest problem I've had so far is getting the details of all those in the Egyptian Masons right.

Congrats!

Cool to hear!

So now is this...

"Currently writing: The complete history of the wild card universe. Fortunately it is contained in only seventeen original volumes."

... synonymous with the RPG or is this a separate project entirely? (Sorry, I'm not really very RPG literate so I don't know what-all they entail ...)

Re: Congrats!

Thanks.

Yes -- the history/concordance and RPG will be one and the same, but the way we're structuring it, the books should appeal to both gamers, and wild card fans (and writers!) in search of an encyclopedia or concordance.

There will be seperate chapters on history and background of the world, entries for virtually all characters (My original cut-off was going to be all named characters, but that was a tad too ambituous.) The characters will be divided into "major" who will get the full write-up, and "not so major" (I would hate to use the term "minor") who will get an abbreviated write-up, in most cases simply because the detailed info just isn't there.

I'm writing everything but the gaming stats and profiles, which will also be quite detailed and will fit in with the Mutants and Masterminds (I hope I got that right) line that Green Ronin does.

Re: Congrats!

Ah, I see. Wow, now I'm excited. I've been wishing for a long time that a history like this existed. I went about chronologizing everything a while back, but that was as far as I got. Fantastic! I guess I'll have to attend Gen*Con 2008 now so I can get a copy hot off the press.

Re: Congrats!

Taking a brief break myself, from the gaming ms.

If the publishing schedule holds and the book does indeed premiere at GenCon, I'll probably be there myself. We'll see how it shakes out, but certainly I'd like to go. It's in Indianapolis, so that should be somewhat close to you, anyway.

I don't really do gaming anymore, but I buy the odd book, so if this has crossover history appeal, then very cool.

:)

It should be of interest. The other thing is that Green Ronin does really beautiful volumes, nicely illustrated, and art is something that's been rather inconsistent for wild cards over the years. (Though the cover for the first book in the new series is a welcome change.) I have high hopes for the look of this volume.

I did some proofreading of the M&M Paragons book, and when I saw the Wild Cards entry in the bibliography, I nearly shouted with joy. I love Wild Cards and M&M, and can't wait to see the books.

Thanks.

The ms will be a monster and will no doubt need careful proofreading. If you get involved with this one, I'm sure you'll do a better job than the proofreader on the first new volume who kept leaving me snarky notes, like, "You do know that the Dodgers moved to Los Angeles in 1957?" To which I (or rather George) replied, "You do know that this is an alternate history?"

Still, I suppose that's better than the iBooks decision to go WITHOUT proofreaders.

Heh. You know, after this was mentioned on Captain Comics, and I managed to track down my copies of Deuces Down and Death Folds Five (lovely work, by the way!), I thought I'd make a proofing run myself, for my own enjoyment - I used to do it as a job, working on the "Hints to Exporters" series for the Dept. of Trade & Industry (you won't have heard of it, don't worry). Impossible job. I got too caught up in the story/ies to keep my mind on the task at hand. Compliments to the author, sir! Maybe when I read it again....

Cheers,

Hi Carl: Thanks. Glad you enjoyed the book. Proof reading is often a thankless but necessary task. Nice to have a publisher again who indulges in it.
